World Championship of Online Poker
If there’s an online equivalent of the World Series of Poker (WSOP), PokerStars’ World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) has to be it. It is a huge online event, which goes on from September 1st, 2007, till the end of the month. Poker Stars will have a day-by-day rundown of the event on their site (take note that PokerStars can change that schedule any time).
Last year (2006) the WCOOP was such a resounding success, that it can now be considered one of the largest ever poker events, both online and offline. Prizes totaling a stunning $18,500,000 were given away, and word has it, this year everything is going to be bigger and better.
As professional poker players joined in the fray, the biggest single 2006 win came for J.C Tran and was worth no less than $600,000.
Every single day during September there will be some sort of poker event you can take part in. The biggest guaranteed prize-pools are in Texas Holdem, but do not worry if you’re an Omaha or Razz player either. The No-Limit Holdem Triple Shoot-Out has made its way back to the calendar but other, more exotic genres will be present too, like 5-Card Draw and 2-7 Triple Draw, each of them with some pretty impressive guaranteed prize-pools. Buy-ins for the events range from $215 to $5,200, and if it seems a bit steep, don’t get turned off, I’m sure PokerStars.com will feature a whole truckload of satellites for each one.
The highlight of the WCOOP is of course the $5,000,000 No Limit Texas Holdem guaranteed main event, taking place on the last day. Buy-in for this tournament is $2,600, and I’m dying to see what the winner will end up taking home.
If you consider yourself a serious poker player, the Pokerstars WCOOP is a poker event you simply cannot afford to pass on.
