After months of anticipation, the inaugural GuangDong Ltd Asia Millions Main Event ran this past week and featured many of poker's biggest names. Germany's Niklas Heinecker shined brighter than any of the big-name players as he won the Asia Millions along with HK$34,600,000 (US$4,464,516).
When the eight-player final table of this tourney started, most people would've put their money on Sorel Mizzi to win. After all, Mizzi has $7.8 million in live poker tournament winnings and started out as the final table chip leader. However, the fast-paced action and high blinds didn't give him much of an advantage as he busted out in third place.
This gave way to a heads-up match between Heinecker and Australia's Jeff Rossiter. Heinecker had a 3-to-1 chip advantage, and with the high blinds, Rossiter was forced to go all-in pretty quickly. He held Q-T(o) against Heinecker's Ah-9h combo, and the board was dealt Kh-5d-4c-3d-Js; this gave the German the win with ace-high.
After winning the GDAM 2013 Main Event Heinecker said, "I'm feeling pretty awesome, I'm feeling pretty good. That was a great day, great event and I'm extremely happy to take it down."
When asked if he had any nerves coming into the tournament, Heinecker added, "Actually, it was pretty relaxed throughout the entire tournament. And, like the heads-up, it was so close that I became a little tense and I really wanted to win at that point. So before that, I had low expectations - you can bust really really quickly here."
Before winning the GDAM 2013 Main Event, Nicklas Heinecker was primarily known for his outstanding online poker play. But following this win, he should definitely have more of a live tournament reputation too. Thanks to his latest $4.6 million cash, Heinecker now has $4,773,583 in live tournament winnings.
