Super Bowl XLVII wasn't supposed to break any major records for betting activity. After all, bookmakers didn't exactly see the Baltimore Ravens vs. San Francisco 49ers as a dream matchup. However, all predictions went out the window when the 2013 Super Bowl broke a very interesting record.

Beating the Spread

The Nevada Gaming Control Board said that Super Bowl bettors wagered an unprecedented $98.9 million at their state casinos. Specific numbers show that Nevada's 183 sportsbooks pulled in a collective $7.3 million from the big game. The state's previous record for Super Bowl wagering was $94.5 million, which was bet on the 2006 Super Bowl.

Die Hard Fans

Seeing as how the 2013 Super Bowl broke the old mark by $4.4 million, some people may be wondering why this game stood out. And Las Vegas sportsbook manager Jay Kornegay gave a possible explanation as he said, "Northern Nevada gets swamped with 49ers money." Kornegay is referring to how Californians drove to their neighboring state to wager on San Francisco.

In addition to this, many bookmakers believe that 49ers starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick played a big role in increased betting activity. He was a star at Nevada University, so many local Silver State bettors were encouraged to wager on the game. 

No Safety

As we mentioned earlier, bookmakers collectively earned $7.3 million on the 2013 Super Bowl. However, it could've been even more if not for a late safety.

Many books offered a long-shot prop bet on whether the game would feature a safety or not. Baltimore punter Sam Koch intentionally took a safety late in the game so that the Ravens didn't risk getting a punt being blocked in their own end zone. And this actually ended up burning plenty of Nevada sportsbooks.

A Crazy Day

Johnny Avello, who runs the Wynn Las Vegas, discussed this outcome along with other prop bets by saying, "Everything that could've happened yesterday almost did. All the props – `Will this guy pass by this much?' `Will this guy make this many receptions' – all of those were, `Yes.'"

Taking this into account, Super Bowl XLVII was definitely a memorable occasion that will be remembered for years to come - especially among sports bettors.
