Myth #1: Players should aim for 21

One myth that many new blackjack players believe is that the goal of the game is to reach 21. The reason why is because 21 is blackjack's top score, and getting closer to this gives you a better opportunity to beat the dealer. However, the words "beat the dealer" clearly spell out your goal in blackjack. In short, your moves should be based on your score and the dealer's upcard - not getting close to 21.

Myth #2: All Blackjack Games are the Same

Another problem players run into is thinking that all blackjack games feature the same rules. This is what leads people to believing that perfect blackjack strategy always results in a 0.5% house edge. But the reality is that blackjack games offer varying rules depending on what land-based or online casino is running the tables. For example, some casinos may allow the dealer to hit on a soft 17 while others won't. Since you want the dealer to stand on a soft 17, your chances improve with casinos that offer this rule.

Myth #3: Third Base can affect the Entire Table

When somebody makes a mistake at third base (seat to dealer's immediate right), it's widely believed to affect the entire table. For example, a player hitting when they shouldn't be and taking the dealer's bust card could cause other players to lose the hand. But just as a bad player at third base can hurt the table, they can also help by hitting and taking a card that could improve a dealer's hand. Over the long-run, it doesn't make a bit of difference what third base does as long as you use sound blackjack strategy.

Myth #4: Copying the Dealer puts you on Equal Footing

One final myth we'd like to cover includes a belief that copying the dealer will put you and the house on even ground. After all, the house holds an edge, so why not mimic their moves? The reason why you shouldn't mimic their moves is because dealers act after you, meaning if you bust first, it doesn't matter what they do afterward. By copying the dealer, you could be facing almost a 6% house edge.

As you can see, blackjack myths aren't exactly helpful to your play, which is why we highly recommend that you avoid believing in them.
